When multimedia computers first appeared, different external devices used different transmitting interfaces. For example, printers had to work through the
COM port, while modems had to be connected to
RS232, and mice and keyboards to PS/2. Using these various types of transmission interfaces was confusing and time consuming, not to mention inconvenient, as it required installation of a bunch of drivers and a computer reboot before the devices could function. Thus to save time and trouble, a unified interface was necessary. |
