USB: A Bridge Between
Your Device and Your PC

USB (Universal Serial Bus) is one of the most popular connection interfaces used in today's computers and consumer electronics. It is intended to replace varieties of serial and parallel ports. Cell phones, digital cameras, and external hard drives all use USB as the main transmission interface when connected to other devices and computers. Other advantages include an efficient power supply and plug-and-play and hot swapping abilities.
When multimedia computers first appeared, different external devices used different transmitting interfaces. For example, printers had to work through the COM port, while modems had to be connected to RS232, and mice and keyboards to PS/2. Using these various types of transmission interfaces was confusing and time consuming, not to mention inconvenient, as it required installation of a bunch of drivers and a computer reboot before the devices could function. Thus to save time and trouble, a unified interface was necessary.
When USB 1.1 first came to market, USB ports were mainly meant for use with mice, keyboards, and other human-machine interfaces which do not require high speed. As technology has marched forward, however, new kinds of media formats and storage requirements demanded more bandwidth. That's why we need a new USB interface that performs better than the current standards.
